ALWAYS WHOLE

– about the human experience and principles in action
By Natasha Swerdloff
There are times when everything feels easy, clear, and open. Like a quiet day at the seaside, where the sun glitters on the water's surface and the horizon stretches endlessly. We feel calm, open, connected—as if we see things "in the right light."
And then there are days when everything feels heavy, messy, and overwhelming. The wind picks up, the waves rise, and the surface of the sea appears dark and turbulent. We lose our bearings, our thoughts spin, and our emotions draw us into stories about everything that is wrong.
We may believe that the immediate solution is to make the storm go away. We may try to change our circumstances, get our thoughts under control, or find other ways to calm the turmoil.
But peace and clarity do not wait for something to change.
The foundation of the human mind
The understanding that calm always lies just beneath the turbulent sea is found in the Three Principles described by Sydney Banks. He was neither a psychologist nor a researcher, but simply an ordinary man who experienced a profound inner awakening.
Banks saw something fundamental in the nature of the mind. Something that applies to everyone, regardless of culture, background, or life story, and for the rest of his life he shared this simple but life-changing perspective.
Sydney Banks described three universal principles—Vitality, Consciousness, and Thought—that are always at play in our experience of life. They are not techniques or methods, but describe how human experience is created moment by moment.
When we see how the principles work, it changes the way
we understand ourselves and others.
The Principle of Thought – the creative force behind all experience
The word "thought" may initially make us think of the personal thoughts that run through our minds: everything we analyze, evaluate, and consider. However, Sydney Banks pointed to something deeper: the Principle of Thought.
The Principle Thought is the creative force that shapes everything we experience. It is not the content of our thoughts, but the life-giving function itself that enables our personal thoughts to take shape.
We can compare it to the wind over the sea. The wind creates waves, but the windisnot the waves—it is the force behind them. In the same way, the Principle of Thought is not the individual thoughts, but the force that causes them to arise and shape our experience of life.
When we understand this, we see that our feelings do not come directly from circumstances, but from the thoughts that the principle of Thought creates in the moment. This is why we can experience the same situation completely differently from day to day—even from moment to moment—depending on the thoughts flowing through our minds.
This insight shows us that we don't need to change our external circumstances to find peace. Thought storms can subside on their own when we are no longer caught up in them.
The Principle of Consciousness – the living light behind all experience
Consciousness is what makes every experience possible. Without it, nothing would emerge—we would not experience a thought, a feeling, a sight, or a sound. It can be compared to the light in a projector: without the light, there would be no images on the screen. We would not be able to see them, no matter how beautiful or dramatic they are.
In its essence, consciousness is unchanging. It is always whole, clear, and unaffected by what it illuminates. Storms may rage in our minds, and waves may rise, but consciousness—the very depths of the ocean—remains calm and intact. It can neither be damaged nor weakened, no matter what we experience.
What can change, then, is not consciousness itself, but our current experience of life – our 'personal consciousness'. It is like the difference between standing on a mountain and seeing the landscape spread out in all directions, or being caught in thick fog where we can only see a few steps ahead of us. These two very different experiences can take place in the same landscape or situation.
When our perspective broadens, we see more clearly, feel calmer, and experience natural love and understanding moving within us. When our perspective narrows, everything can seem heavy, dense, and overwhelming. The beautiful thing is that it can change in an instant.
A flash of insight—like the sun breaking through the clouds—can change our entire experience, even though nothing external has changed.
The Principle of Vitality – the unchanging current beneath everything
Vitality is the invisible energy from which all life springs. It is not something we have to create, and it does not depend on our mood, strength, or circumstances. It is an inherent part of our nature and the force that makes the heart beat, the lungs breathe, and the mind gain insights.
No matter what we have experienced, no matter how dark or violent life may feel, the Life Force remains intact. It cannot be damaged or lost. It carries us through what we are going through, and it is the source of our ability to heal, rise again, and see the world with fresh eyes.
When we discover that this life-giving stream is always within us,
Even in the most difficult moments, we feel a deep sense of security.
We understand that we have never been separated from that which sustains us.
Discovering that we are already whole
Realizing that our experience is always created by the interaction between Thought, Consciousness, and Life Force makes us less afraid of our own storms. We understand that unpleasant feelings are not dangerous; they are merely temporary waves created by Thought.
This understanding does not mean that life always feels easy, or that we never feel bored, angry, or worried. It means that we know that beneath all feelings and thoughts there is an unshakeable calm. And that knowledge changes everything.
We discover that we don't have to wait for life to 'fall into place' before we can be okay. We can be okay in the midst of the storm because we know that, in our essence, we are whole—always.
Storms come and go. Thoughts change shape. Waves rise and fall. But deep down—beneath all that is changeable—there is something that always remains intact. Our true nature.
No matter what has happened or what is happening right now, you are not broken.
You are, and always have been, whole.
Dear Natasha. That's great – the same applies to physical symptoms. I feel that my thoughts have calmed down and I see most things much more clearly, but my body is NOISY with strange sensations, sensory disturbances, tremors, and pain, as if there is a lot of energy that needs to be released after many years of shutdown – it feels intense, and my thoughts quickly take hold and run wild :)
Yes, this also applies to physical symptoms. Not because the body is "doing something wrong," but because the experience of the body, like everything else, comes alive for us through the same source. When the mind becomes calmer, the body can be felt more clearly. For some, this is experienced as noise, restlessness, energy, tremors, or pain. Not as a sign that something is wrong, but often as simply more space to feel life as it is, without it being muffled by constant mental activity.
It makes so much sense that thoughts quickly take hold and want to explain, understand, or protect. That's just what thoughts do. They are not a problem, and they don't need to be stopped or controlled. Perhaps the most important thing is to know that there is nothing you need to go through, trigger, or get rid of. The body does not need help along the way. It is already carried by the same intelligence as the rest of life. When we see this, calmness often descends all by itself, including in the body, without us doing anything about it. Be gentle with yourself. There is no rush. You are not behind, and you are not falling apart. You are already whole ❤️
