ALWAYS HEALTHY

– on the human experience and the principles of action
By Natasha Swerdloff
There are times when everything feels easy, clear, and open. Like a quiet day by the sea, where the sun glistens on the water’s surface and the horizon stretches endlessly. We feel calm, open, and connected—as if we’re seeing things “in the right light.”
And then there are days when everything feels heavy, chaotic, and overwhelming. The wind picks up, the waves rise, and the surface of the sea seems dark and turbulent. We lose our bearings, our thoughts race, and our emotions pull us into stories about everything that’s wrong.
We may think that the immediate solution is to make the storm go away. We might try to change our circumstances, get our thoughts in order, or find other ways to calm the turmoil.
But peace and clarity don't wait for things to change.
The Foundation of the Human Mind
The idea that calm always lies just beneath the stormy sea is rooted in an understanding of The Three Principles, as described by Sydney Banks. He was neither a psychologist nor a scientist, but simply an ordinary man who experienced a profound inner awakening.
Banks saw something fundamental in the nature of the mind—something that applies to everyone, regardless of culture, background, or life story—and for the rest of his life, he shared this simple yet life-changing perspective.
Sydney Banks described three universal principles—Vitality, Consciousness, and Thought—that are always at work in our experience of life. They are not techniques or methods, but describe how human experience is created moment by moment.
When we see how the principles work, it changes the way we
the way we understand ourselves and others.
The Principle of Thought—the creative force behind all experience
The word “thought” might first make us think of the personal thoughts running through our minds: everything we analyze, evaluate, and consider. But Sydney Banks pointed to something deeper: the Principle of Thought.
The Principle of Thought is the creative force that shapes everything we experience. It is not the content of our thoughts, but the life-giving function itself that enables our personal thoughts to take shape.
We can compare it to the wind over the ocean. The wind creates waves, but the windisnot the waves—it is the force behind them. In the same way, the Principle of Thought is not the individual thoughts, but the force that causes them to arise and shapes our experience of life.
Once we understand this, we see that our emotions do not arise directly from circumstances, but from the thoughts that the Principle of Thought creates in the moment. That is why we can experience the same situation in completely different ways from day to day—even from moment to moment—depending on the thoughts flowing through our minds.
This insight shows us that we don’t need to change our external circumstances to find peace. A whirlwind of thoughts can subside on its own when we are no longer caught up in it.
The Principle of Consciousness—the living light behind all experience
Consciousness is what makes every experience possible. Without it, nothing would emerge—we would not experience a thought, a feeling, a sight, or a sound. It can be compared to the light in a projector: without the light, there are no images on the screen. We cannot see them, no matter how beautiful or dramatic they are.
At its core, consciousness is unchanging. It is always whole, clear, and unaffected by what it illuminates. Storms may rage in our minds, and waves may rise, but consciousness—the very depths of the ocean—remains calm and intact. It can neither be damaged nor weakened, no matter what we experience.
What can change, then, is not consciousness itself, but our current experience of life—our “personal consciousness.” It’s like the difference between standing on a mountain and seeing the landscape stretch out in every direction, or being trapped in thick fog, where we can see only a few steps ahead of us. These two very different experiences can take place in the same landscape or situation.
When our perspective broadens, we see more clearly, feel calmer, and experience natural love and understanding flowing within us. When our perspective narrows, everything can seem heavy, oppressive, and overwhelming. The beauty of it is that it can change in an instant.
A flash of insight—like the sun breaking through the clouds—can transform our entire experience, even though nothing on the outside has changed.
The Principle of Vitality—the unchanging current underlying everything
Vitality is the invisible energy from which all life springs. It is not something we have to create, and it does not depend on our mood, strength, or circumstances. It is an inherent part of our nature and the force that makes the heart beat, the lungs breathe, and the mind gain insights.
No matter what we’ve been through, no matter how dark or overwhelming life may feel, the Life Force remains intact. It cannot be damaged or lost. It carries us through whatever we’re facing, and it is the source of our ability to heal, rise again, and see the world with fresh eyes.
When we realize that this life-giving current is always within us,
Even in the most difficult moments, we feel a deep sense of security.
We understand that we have never been separate from that which sustains us.
To realize that we are already whole
Realizing that our experience is always shaped by the interplay between Thought, Consciousness, and Life Force makes us less afraid of our own storms. We understand that unpleasant emotions are not dangerous; they are merely temporary waves created by Thought.
This understanding doesn’t mean that life always feels easy, or that we never feel sad, angry, or worried. It means that we know there is an unshakable calm beneath all our feelings and thoughts. And that knowledge changes everything.
We realize that we don’t have to wait for life to “fall into place” before we can be okay. We can be okay in the midst of the storm, because we know that, at our core, we are whole—always.
Storms come and go. Thoughts take on different forms. Waves rise and subside. But deep down—beneath all that change—there is something that remains intact. Our true nature.
No matter what has happened or what is happening right now, you are not broken.
You are, and have always been, whole.
Dear Natasha. That’s wonderful—the same goes for physical symptoms. I feel as though my thoughts have calmed down and I see most things much more clearly, but my body is RUMBLING with strange sensations, sensory disturbances, tremors, and pain, as if there’s a lot of energy that needs to be released after many years of being shut down—it feels intense, and my thoughts quickly take hold and run wild :)
Yes, this also applies to physical symptoms. Not because the body is “doing something wrong,” but because our experience of the body—just like everything else—comes to life for us through the same source. When the mind becomes calmer, the body can feel more distinct. For some, this is experienced as noise, restlessness, energy, tremors, or pain. Not as a sign that something is wrong, but often simply as there being more space to feel life as it is, without it being muffled by constant mental activity.
It makes so much sense that thoughts quickly take hold and try to explain, understand, or protect. That’s just what thoughts do. They aren’t a problem, and they don’t need to be stopped or controlled. Perhaps the most important thing is to know that there’s nothing you need to work through, release, or get rid of. The body doesn’t need any help along the way. It’s already carried by the same intelligence as the rest of life. When we see this, a sense of calm often settles in all on its own—even in the body—without us having to do anything about it. Be gentle with yourself. There’s no rush. You’re not behind, and you’re not falling apart. You’re already whole ❤️
