Beneath the Surface

– On Changes in the Clarity of Thoughts

Imagine that your mind is like the ocean. On the surface, the weather is constantly changing. Some days the sky is clear, the sun is shining, and the water lies still and sparkling. Other days, the storm whips up waves, the wind howls, and visibility is poor.

That’s how our minds work, too. Our thoughts and feelings are constantly changing. Sometimes we’re in a state of heightened awareness: our thoughts are clear, we have a broad perspective, we see opportunities, and we feel love and gratitude. Other times, our awareness wanes: our thoughts become heavy, our perspective narrows, and everything seems more difficult or problematic.

Sydney Banks described these shifts as differentlevels of consciousness. They are completely natural, and we cannot control them directly—just as we cannot control the weather. But we can learn to understand what is happening, and that changes everything.

The Weather in the Mind

Life doesn't feel the way it is—it feels the way we think it is. When the mind is calm and clear, life feels easier, and we see connections we couldn't see before. When the mind is restless, problems feel bigger, people are harder to get along with, and the future seems less hopeful.

It may be the same situation, but the experience changes because the quality of our thoughts changes. Just as the ocean can look dramatically different depending on whether we’re looking at it during a storm or in sunny weather.

The Three Principles

The Three Principles describe how every human experience comes into being:

  • Thoughts– The form that creative power is currently taking.
  • Consciousness—The ability that makes a thought come alive and become real to us.
  • Vital Force– The universal energy that animates all life.

We never experience the world directly—only our thoughts about the world, at the very moment we think them. It’s like seeing the ocean through the weather that’s currently shaping its surface. When we realize this, we become less afraid of the storms. We know that the calm beneath the surface is still there—always.

To dive in

Beneath all the shifting thoughts and emotions lies a quiet, untouched place—just like the depths of the ocean, where the water is always calm, no matter what the surface looks like.

We don’t get there by controlling our thoughts or “thinking positively,” but by letting the mind find its own balance. When we stop taking our mental state so seriously, we naturally sink deeper. Sometimes it happens quickly, other times slowly. But it always happens on its own.

The perspective shifts

When our level of consciousness is low, everything seems more difficult, and we often react out of fear, frustration, or resistance. As our level of consciousness rises, we see things more broadly and deeply. What once seemed stuck may now seem simple—or may even cease to be a problem altogether.

It’s not the situation that has changed—it’s our state of mind. And when we realize that we don’t have to wait for better weather to feel good, we gain a freedom we didn’t know we had.

The Silent Truth

Deep within us lies an innate sense of health, wisdom, and love. This is our natural state—our “factory settings.” It can be overshadowed by thoughts, but it can never be destroyed.

Living with this understanding does not mean that we never experience storms. But we know that they always pass, and that the depths of the ocean—the calm, the clarity, the love—are always just beneath the surface. And the fact that we know this changes the way we live our lives.
