This Is How Your Mind Works!
By Natasha Swerdloff

Have you ever wondered why some days feel light and carefree, while others feel heavy and overwhelming? Perhaps, like most people, you believe that your feelings stem from what’s happening outside of you—from work, relationships, or circumstances.
But what if I told you that your experience of life is created from within you? That your thoughts about what’s happening determine your state of mind, and not what’s actually happening? What if I told you that the key to inner peace lies deep within you?
Thoughts are suggestions—not truths
Imagine that your thoughts are like items on sale at a supermarket. There are plenty of choices, but you don’t have to take everything off the shelves and put it all in your cart. In the same way, you don’t have to engage with every single thought that pops into your mind.
Some thoughts are useful, others are irrelevant, and some are downright distracting. When you realize this, you discover something important: Your thoughts are not, in and of themselves, true or important—they are simply options. You can add them to your cart or leave them on the shelves.
Many of us have gotten into the habit of piling a lot of thoughts into our minds and, as a result, taking most of them far too seriously. We believe that if a thought pops into our heads, it must be important.
But what if that’s not the case? What if you could view thoughts as temporary, fleeting phenomena—like clouds drifting across the sky? They come and go without you having to get involved with them.
The mind works on its own
You don’t actually have to try hard to find peace of mind. Just as a puddle clears up on its own when you stop stirring up the mud with your foot, your mind will settle down if you don’t try to control or change your thoughts.
The less you struggle with your thoughts, the more freely they flow by. That doesn't mean you should ignore your thoughts, but simply that you don't need to react to every single one that comes to mind.
Imagine you’re sitting by a river, watching leaves float on the water. Some are beautiful, others are withered; some are large, others small. If you grab a leaf and hold on to it, you won’t notice the others.
If you let all the leaves continue on their way undisturbed, you’ll find that new ones are always coming. Your thoughts work the same way. They’re constantly in motion, and you don’t need to hold on to them.
You are more than your thoughts
Like me and many others, you’ve probably found yourself caught in a negative train of thought and thought you’d never get out of it. But you did. Have you also noticed that your mood can change suddenly, even when nothing external has changed?
This can happen because thoughts are, by their very nature, temporary. They have only the power or intensity that you give them in the present moment. When you realize that you don’t have to take every thought seriously, a sense of freedom and lightness arises within you.
However, you don’t have to wait for your thoughts to change in order to feel better. You can simply let them be and know that they will change on their own. Just as the weather changes from day to day, so do your thoughts. A storm doesn’t last forever, and neither do angry or sad thoughts and feelings.
Calm is your natural state
Behind every thought—the ones you believe in and the ones you let pass—lies a deep, natural calm. It’s not something you have to achieve or work toward. It’s already there.
When you don’t let yourself get carried away by every thought, it becomes easier to feel that sense of calm, and you can navigate through life with greater ease. Just as the water in a puddle is clear when you don’t stir it up with your rubber boot.
Your natural stateisclarity and well-being—not stress and worry. The restless thoughts that arise are nothing more than ripples on the surface. They do not affect the calm that lies beneath.
The Path to an Easier Life
This insight changes everything. After all, what is life like if you don’t let random thoughts dictate your experience? What is it like to know that no matter what thoughts come up, you’re still okay?
This insight gives you freedom and peace of mind, no matter what life throws your way. The next time you feel overwhelmed or caught up in heavy thoughts, remember that they’re just items on the supermarket shelves. It’s up to you to decide whether to put them in your cart.
Life becomes easier. You take things more in stride. Misunderstandings clear up more quickly, and you feel more connected to others. Because this understanding doesn’t just apply to you—it applies to everyone.
You don’t need to get rid of negative thoughts to feel good. You just need to realize that youare notyourthoughts—you are something deeper. When you realize this, life is no longer a struggle, but a natural and effortless flow that you can go with.
